Consumer tips: France
- If you leave your property unoccupied for more than 2 weeks at a time then turn the mains water stopcock off. Your French house insurance requires this.
- French hot water cylinders require at least a bi-ennial service to clean out calcium deposits and replace the anode inside. If you have bought a property in France recently have this done immediately and you won't have to worry about being flooded out.
- All reputable plumbers are obliged to have "assurance decennale". If you have work done by someone who is not insured, the work will not be insured. If there is any damage to your property as a result of faulty materials or workmanship then costs will not be recoverable from your insurance company. If in any doubt ask for a copy of their "decennale" and check its validity date.
- Try to resist buying what seem to be bargains at DIY stores, including hot water cylinders and sanitary-ware. More often than not your plumber will spend twice the amount of time trying to fit these cheap imports, and as for spare parts forget it! Your plumber can supply all of these and at a 5.5% vat rating, with technical back-up and spares!
- Please don't ask your plumber for an written estimate if you need emergency
work done there and then. This kind of work is normally charged at an
hourly rate over and above a nominal call out fee . Find out the rate and any materials will obviously be extra.
- Time spent getting the required materials for your emergency (if he doesn't carry them) is also chargeable.
